On Friday 19th February, the Tagus Golf Society held its first competition of the year at the Estoril Golf Club.

In anticipation of possible bad weather, the Newstead Cups are played for in Greensomes format with teams of 2 players playing alternate shots. The course is suffering from the unusual amount of rain that has fallen over the last few months so the balls were landing heavy and there was no forgiving roll to give that extra distance. Luckily the sun shone for most of the morning so spirits were high – as were the final scores!

The winning team, Derek McIvor/Henk Vaandrager, managed to return a score of 76 points, followed by Margot Zimmerli/Peter Dekker, Anita Beselin/Hilario Sanches and Hans Mühlenbeck/Richard Betts all with 77 points. Hans Mühlenbeck, this year’s Captain won Nearest the Pin and the Longest Drive prizes were won by Fernando Oliveira and Karin Dekker.

In the evening a gourmet experience at the Vin Rouge Restaurant in downtown Cascais titillated the taste buds of the assembled gathering after the new Committee had welcomed the members with a champagne reception. The next competition will be held on Friday 19th March.
