Portuguese footballer Danny,
currently playing for Zenit St Petersburg, has offered to play in a
match to support victims of the deadly flash-floods in Madeira being
organised by Portuguese champions FC Porto. “I’ll definitely go if asked,”
said the Portuguese midfielder who was born in Venezuela to parents of
Madeiran stock. Danny said his wife and twin sons were in Madeira when
the holiday island was struck by torrential rains and surging
floodwaters last weekend.
His tearful wife had rung
him at training in Spain to say their home in Madeira had been
destroyed by the flash-flooding centred on Funchal, the island’s
capital, added Danny. “I’m very sorry for the people who died in the
floods. It’s a catastrophe. Now we have to hold up our heads and do all
we can.”
FC Porto says it plans to play a special game against a mixed team from Madeira’s biggest clubs, Marítimo and Nacional.
Local hero Cristiano Ronaldo has already confirmed he will play in the game the date of which is expected to be announced soon.
