Last year cruise ships
brought a record-breaking number of passengers to Portugal, setting a
new high after more than 940,000 tourists disembarked from their liners
at a Portuguese port.In total, 945,034 cruise ship
passengers visited Portugal in 2009, easily breaking the previous
record of 904,600 tourists registered in 2008.
This
represents a growth of around four percent in 12 months and included
passengers that arrived at the ports of Leixões, Lisbon, Portimão,
Funchal, the Azores, Viana do Castelo and Cascais.
However,
despite the rise in cruise ship passengers visiting Portugal having
risen by four percent, the actual number of vessels docking in national
ports fell by three per cent.
In 2009, 719 ships
made a stay in Portugal, in comparison to the 739 that visited the year
before, which means while less cruise ships entered the country, the
ones that did were significantly larger than before.
The
ports of Funchal and Portimão registered the biggest growths in
visiting ships, though it was in Lisbon that the highest amount of
vessels docked, with 294 cruise ships using the infrastructures.
Last
year the ports of Cascais and Viana do Castelo were included on
international cruise ship itineraries for the first time ever, and
welcomed four and one ship, respectively.
