How far is Carvoeiro from Faro Airport?

Carvoeiro is a small fishing village, roughly a 45 min transfer from the Faro Airport, in the western Algarve. The Carvoeiro name derives from “Caboiere”, meaning a fishing village from the Arab-medieval period.

Carvoeiro Portugal is situated between Albufeira and Praia da Rocha along the Algarve coastline with remarkable caves, cove beaches and high cliffs with pathways offering spectacular views.

The village is picturesque with its traditional whitewashed houses, narrow cobbled streets and beautiful gardens exhibited from modern private estates. The village centre spreads out to similar fishing villages such as Armação de Pera on the east and Ferragudo on the west.

The Carvoeiro beach is a fisherman’s beach, attached to the village centre and with direct access to the main square. This opening to the sea was used in the past with the intense local fishing activity. The colourful fishing boats used are still visible on the beach and are an emblematic contribution to the fishing history of the Algarve.

Similar small beaches of this area require adventurous walks up and down the cliffs. The beaches worth the effort are Albandeira, Marinha, Vale de Cova, Centeanes and the most famous the Benagil beach because of its sea cave which may only be explored by boat.

The clifftops of Algar Seco along the new Carvoeiro boardwalk are also amazing with access to the strange rock formations and sea caves. Several boats may be found on-site to visit these grottos and the Benagil ‘Cathedral’ Cave.
